About Me
Welcome! My name is Lanita. At fourteen years old, our second oldest son was diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). It was a dark time that became even darker as the illness took a firm hold on his life. My husband and I learned firsthand the stigma, isolation, and grief that comes with parenting a child who has mental illness.
Five years later, just shortly after that son was able to gain control of his OCD, we had the complete shock of discovering that our oldest son has an opioid addiction. We have once again entered a dark time of stigma, isolation, and grief. This time, however, we have the advantage of experience.
Although mental illness and addiction are different, for the parent they have many similarities.
- Mental health problems often trigger addictions
- Both involve shame and stigma
- Both cause parents to question how “good” they are
- Both can be isolating and lonely
- Both can be times of growth through the Great God whose unfailing love and compassion never fail
In the midst of our first “storm”, my hope was that someday I would be able to be a blessing to others because of the path I had unwillingly walked; to be the friend and mentor I had wished for. Somehow, being able to walk beside you, another hurting parent, gives purpose and value to what I experienced.
So, welcome friend! I know if you are reading this you are probably going through your own storms. For that, I am truly sorry. Please know that you are not alone no matter how dark or lonely. My prayer is that something on this website will give you strength for today.
